Spring Dress Refashions

I usually try to visit my local thrift stores at least once a week but for some reason I have been letting that good time slip me by. So on Friday I made myself go to my local Thrifty Shopper and check out their goods.

Seeing all the great refashions on the blogesphere has got me inspired, so I headed over to the dress section. I'm not sure how the price points are for your area but I think $7.99 for a dress is high..... I don't know maybe I'm just cheap. =)

Regardless of the staggering price I did end up buying 6 dresses. I'm trying to build my vintage style wardrobe without spending a lot of money. Also, I won't feel like I need to walk on eggshells with these clothes because they didn't cost a fortune like some of the dresses I have in my closet.

Here is what I brought home.....

This brown with cream dress made for Vera Wang's line at Kohls. It is a size small but it is huge on me but yet too short for comfort! How do people sit in these things? I was thinking of making this into a skirt.

This cute bird print reminds me of some prints that are sold on Mod Cloth. I'm not sure if this is a short dress or a tunic but I will be making this into a shirt. Original tag on it still, $45.00.

This cute little number is the prettiest shade of pink and blue plaid. As a dress it is waaaayyy too short and the strapless is something I would have rocked when I was 25, sigh...
As a skirt it will hit right above the knee, which is something I can live with and didn't want to pass this up. Tags still on it,
"Tommy Girl" from Macys.

This is a larger party dress from "Fashion Bug". It is light as a feather and flowy, I'm always drawn to pink. Part of me wants to keep it as a dress and just take it in but I know I would wear it more often as a skirt.

A short and low cut summer dress will be a cute skirt.

This is my favorite of the group! I love the green and fuchsia. Too short and low cut for my comfort so another cute skirt!

So there you have it.... more fun projects in store! I think now at this rate I'm only going to make a beeline to the dress racks!! Oh no....

Halloween 2010- Wrap up!

Well I did it! I finished his mask an hour before he went out trick or treating. I think it came out great if I do say so myself. =)   Here's what I did. At the Salvation Army I found a pair of white cotton lounge pants $3.99 and a white top for $2.99 and because it was pink tag day, both were 50% off! Score! I found a large piece of red felt at the Thrifty Shopper for 25 cents and straw hat for $1.

I made the tie out of the red fabric with some cardboard to give it some weight.

Ouchie, fabric shears are sharp!

Extra fabric used for the hamburgers with ketchup and pickles! I love love love me some McDonald's pickles!! Yum!

I made his cape and mask using the $2.95 black apron and $3 yellow shirt from Walmart. Then I taped off the shirt and pants using the only tape I could find: duct tape. (no pictures of that sorry) Sprayed the hat, shirt and pants with left over fabric paint and voila! There you have it-  a happy teenager!!!

I told him since I injured myself during costume construction that any Twix or Kit Kats would be confiscated from the treat bag!!!

It was about 38 degrees in Upstate New York and hailed twice last night! I made him wear long johns and jeans under his clothes. BBRRR! He had a good time going out with his friends and didn't mind the cold at all. How do kids do it?? How was the weather in your neck of the woods.

Oh Dorothy!

So we've all seen them in the magazine's and in the blogesphere: the Dorothy Draper Espana Dresser. So beautiful, such a classic.

Sigh, if only my living room could look like these pictures

Well lucky me found a knock off at the local Salvation Army for $15! I was by myself and was trying to figure out how I would get it into my not big car all by myself, but the price was too good, so I bought it. Then wrestled her into my car.
Here's the before:

EEEEKK!!

It was love at first sight, then reality hit. My back hurt so badly from bending over the drawers to paint them and might I mention that I had to paint the grooves THREE times!

The color is Midnight Dream from Behr and I thought I didn't like it at first but now I'm in love again. Grooves and handles were painted using Modern Metals spray paint in Champagne Silver. That's right kiddies I said spray paint! I couldn't find a color I liked in regular paint so spray paint had to do. For the grooves I had to spray into a dixie cup and use a small brush quickly before it dried in the cup. It was madness, but I do like the end result so for $15 it was worth it.

And the after, sorry about the poor picture quality. I think it's time for the hub's and I to get a new digital camera!

 Hello pretty lady!

Here's a closeup of the items on top.

Foo dog is from Marshals-$3.99. Originally he was orange. The small frame is of 2 stamped figures on homemade type paper from the Rescue Mission-$1.00. The tree print is called Love Birds from Etsy seller onceuponapaper. Little french bulldog figure gift from my mother in law.

Well I'm off for now, gotta get ready for work and then head to Mount Adnah Cemetery in Fulton to take a picture of a gravestone for Findagrave (I volunteer) for a fellow genealogist.
